Below Deck Mediterranean season 9 has finally come to an end, but some are looking into how much producer interference became a part of the show, and whether it ruined the season. Below Deck Mediterranean season 9 had an interesting level of drama, especially with the crew that was aboard Mustique. With Captain Sandy Yawn leading the yachties, the rest of the Mustique’s crew struggled to work through the charter season in one way or another. With the interior department being led by Chief Stew Aesha Scott and the exterior being led by Bosun Iain MacLean, the crew had issues.
The interior department of Below Deck Mediterranean season 9 was one of the most drama-filled departments that the series has ever seen. With Chief Stew Aesha coming back to Below Deck Med from Below Deck Down Under, many were curious about the Stews who would be working beneath her. While the crew was down one Stew because of a cabin leak, Aesha quickly named Ellie Dubaich as her Second and Bri Muller as the Third, but the two stews struggled to get along after both crushing on Lead Deckhand Joe Bradley. The drama that ensued was exhausting for everyone aboard Mustiqe.
While there was drama in the interior department that felt like it was more natural, the drama throughout the rest of Below Deck Mediterranean felt forced in some ways. The issues with the exterior department were concerning for the charter’s overall safety, but also made it clear that there could be production interference happening aboard Mustique. Bosun Iain struggled consistently through the charter, making mistakes he shouldn’t be capable of, which led some to wonder if he was faking his poor performance. Chef Johnathan Shillingford also seemed to be making rookie mistakes, leaving viewers confused about who was genuine.
Rumored Producer Plants Made Below Deck Med Season 9 Seem Fake
Chef Jono, Bosun Iain, & Stew Ellie Were All Accused

While several rumors were going around about the producer interference on Below Deck Mediterranean season 9, the majority of them swirled around Iain, Jono, and Ellie. Bosun Iain was the rumored producer plant who seemed least like he was actually an issue this season, though he did make some dangerous mistakes during the charter season. Iain struggled with his managerial skills throughout the charter, and his poor performance led some to question whether he’d been placed in the crew to cause drama. Similarly, Ellie’s performance was questionable, and she caused so much drama that viewers wondered if it was staged.

Chef Jono was the cast member of Below Deck Mediterranean season 9 who seemed most like a producer plant throughout the charter season. While Jono wasn’t having a good charter season in general after fumbling the first few meal services, his performance continually yo-yoed in a way that pushed viewers to question whether or not he was there to prepare meals for the guests, or to simply cause chaos. Jono’s performance continually vacillated back and forth, but his status as a potential producer plant was never revealed. Regardless of whether he was there genuinely or not, the drama was overwhelming.
Too Much Focus On Gael & Nathan's Boatmance
The Slow Building Relationship Wasn’t Dramatic
Although Nathan Gallagher and Gael Cameron’s boatmace wasn’t the only boatmance featured on Below Deck Med season 9, the relationship was the one that wound up being the longest-running romance. Nathan and Gael connected quickly during the charter season, but their boatmance was slow going due to outside factors, like Gael being in a relationship before the season and Nathan’s bromance with Joe. Though they were sweet and wound up staying together post-show, Nathan and Gael’s boatmance wasn’t a source of drama, and it felt inauthentic when the producers tried to infuse drama into it to make it more interesting.
What Producers Can Do To Make Season 10 Less Staged
Letting The Crew Act Naturally Could Help
Although Below Deck Med season 9 is just coming to a close, viewers have their sights set on Below Deck Mediterranean season 10 already. With some casting rumors making it clear that there will be familiar faces on the series, now many are focused on what the producers can do to make the season feel less staged than the last. First and foremost, Below Deck Med producers should eliminate any cast members who were planted into the crew for dramatic purposes. The genuine stories of the crew members are dramatic enough for the show.
On top of eliminating producer plants, the producers of Below Deck Mediterranean should bring more focus to the relationships between the crew members. Below Deck Med season 9 had crew drama, but focused mostly on the issues between crew and charter guests, which isn’t always the most interesting in terms of story. Below Deck Mediterranean season 10 would do well to include different styles of storylines, featuring tensions between friendships, boatmances, and everything in between.
